On the 17 December, at 18h30, this roundtable will be analyzing the impact of the ITER in Catalonia.
Antoni Flotats, director of operations of the Vacuum Division of TELSTAR will be participating next 17 December, as speaker, at a conference on the ITER project, organized by the Official Association of Industrial Engineers of Catalonia (COEIC) Mr. Flotats presentation will be addressing Telstar's experience in the design and manufacture of one of the mechanical systems, incorporated in the ITER's fusion reactor for power generation during its testing phase.
The objective of this conference will be to analyze the opportunities and the impact the ITER project might have on Catalonia, from an academic, research and development, industrial and business point of view. This conference will also be attended by the following personalities: Mr. Javier Dies, Professor of the UPC's Nuclear Engineering Department and Director of the Fusion Energy Laboratory, Mrs. Ana Belén del Cerro, Head Technician of the CDTI and Industry coordinator for Fusion for Energy, and Mr. Benjamin Perier, Business Intelligence and Economic Analysis Contracts and Procurements Department of Fusion for Energy
Telstar's contribution
Mr. Flotats' presentation will include mainly a brief technical presentation of the project and a reflection on the impact of this type of project on the business and economical development of the country. It will also address the need to backup and implement a business and institutional culture that will help link Catalonia and Spain with the development of high technology and at the same time assist Spanish companies in obtaining a higher technological potential at international level.
Telstar was the company that manufactured the first application of the ITER Project, worldwide. The Divertor Remote Handling, a fully remote mechanical system for the transportation, assembly and disassembly of the 53 parts of 9 tons, which form the Divertor; a system responsible for collecting the impurities produced by the high temperatures inside the reactor.
ITER project
ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is an international research and development project aimed at demonstrating the technological feasibility of fusion energy, as an alternative to the world's increasing demand for energy and the progressive exhaustion of fossil energy sources. Its objective is to build a big experimental fusion reactor capable of generating clean and safe energy from hydrogen, deuterium and tritium isotopes. The reactor will be based on the nuclear fusion principle and it is envisaged to be a future solution for the generation of a clean, economical, safe and practically inexhaustible source of energy.
COEIC conference
The conference on the ITER project, organized by the Official Association of Industrial Engineers of Catalonia (COEIC), will be held on the 17 December 2008, at 18h30, in the Pompeu Fabra room, the headquarters of the COEIC in Barcelona (Via Laietana, 39).
